Perfume genius? | Imelda Hehir
We have long had to put up with them in the Daily Mail but now they’re invading our perfume counters, Imelda Hehir investigates celebrity perfumes.
Does anyone recall how big a deal J-Lo’s ‘Glow’ was about ten years ago and now we can’t but assume a perfume is standard practice like releasing a single, why? Because everyone who can be deemed anyone has their own scent on the market from Halley Berry to Nicki Minaj, even the fictional James Bond’s musk is available for your bathroom cabinet. Are these a perfumes going to give you your own VIP feeling, or just act as a safety Christmas gift?
First we look at the bizarrely bottled; ‘Someday’ the latest essence offering from Justin Bieber, yes that’s correct the little Canadian scamp has more than one. The fragrance is targeted at 14-18 year olds so it’s not going to be a lavish revival for Chanel No.5. It’s harmless, fruity and perhaps my love of coconut made me slightly bias but regardless of that I would be less offended by a teen if they were wearing this than playing ‘Baby’ in front of me.
From that we move on to Taylor Swifts ‘Wonderstruck’ whose bottle is parallel to Swift’s sweet image. Once again it’s fruity with berries and vanilla, whisked together to give every woman that hint of Swift, without the boy troubles. However as it’s similar to ‘Someday’ one has to be annoyed that all these fragrances marketed to women are nearly the same, which both is boring and un-unique.
However when it comes to Lady Gaga’s ‘Fame’ we have a notable difference to ‘Wonderstruck’ just like our celebrities in question. The perfume comes in what looks to be a vile of poison, this is the Gaga we know and love and what adds to her special stamp on the perfume is the colour, it sprays a black mist which when rubbed in turns clear. As for the scent itself, it’s heavy and mature and has a vague lavender scent with incense and out of all three if I was to wear one this winter I would opt for ‘Fame’, despite its hype the scent is the most credible.
While there is nothing overly wrong with the perfumes, there is nothing exactly exceptional about them. They don’t make one feel any more glamorous, and certainly don’t give you the most outstanding aroma above anything else on the market. They are usually dust collects at the back of the wardrobe; my Victoria Beckham perfume from 2005 is an asthmatic’s worst nightmare at this stage. Either way, many of you will open one on December 25th whether you like it or not and you can then be the judge for yourself.
