That’s a Wrap! Another Fantastic Year of Express

By Editor in Chief Claire Watson

Well lads, it has finally come to an end. I am proud to present the final issue of volume 27, of the University Express.

First things first, I would like to congratulate our editors Baneen and Chloe on their respective nominations at the upcoming Smedia awards, and I’d like to celebrate the team as a whole on our nomination for Newspaper of the Year.

The team are leaving things on a high note, with incredible articles to see you out.

In news, Marc covers the CPSC’s recent 72 hour fast for Palestine, as well as the increase in road accidents and deaths in Ireland. David sits down with Munster Rugby CEO Ian Flanagan and discusses the future for our province’s rugby team.

In student news, Jack has a gripping opinion piece on the recent USI-AMLÉ cómhdáil, and his opinion on UCC’s relationship to the USI-AMLÉ’s current state of affairs.

On interviews, our reporter Anna chats with brothers Graham and David McSweeney on the growth of their independent film company. Meanwhile Chloe chats with the team to get the hot scoop on the Newsroom and its infamous ‘Slay Counter’.

She can’t be stopped, as Baneen treats us to three amazing articles this week, as she takes us through her trip to Edinburgh and teaches us how she navigates holidays with her siblings. She also says farewell to college and shares her words of wisdom with new students.

In Science and Environment, Leah examines Cork’s future as a sustainable city, and the initiatives taken locally and nationally in protecting our planet.

More on Cork, we are delighted to share that the UCC Choral society will be hosting their 2024 Sounds of Spring concert in aid of Marymount Hospice on 19 April, get your tickets because they’re selling out fast!

Mia does what Mia does best and merges feminism with film theory in her “Ode to Unlikable Female Characters” as she explores The Curse and The Industry.

In Gaming, Bonny covers the recent fiasco that was the recent Apex Legends Global Series tournament, where gamers were hacked live on screen.

Luca teaches us to read more, to improve our attention spans by sitting down with a good book. And, if you missed our last issue, go back and check out his long-read recommendations.

And on reading, Sofia treats us to an amazing piece on our consumption of pornography and showcasing the difference between visual porn and erotica.

Finally, I can’t be held back for too long. I’ve finally pieced together my own reading list, with recommendations from different genres, and a lot of lesbian reads.

It’s been an incredible year, and I look forward to what next year’s Express team will bring.
