Cork Music Community Unite For Sexual Violence Centre Fundraiser

Cork’s music community are rallying together to show solidarity and support to victims of sexual violence by organising a huge fundraising event for the SexualViolence Centre Cork (SVCC), taking place at the newly renovated Cyprus Avenue, on Sunday 23rd December.

In light of the recent Court case involving a 17 year old victim’s underwear being used an ‘asking for it’ defence for the accused, this fundraiser hits home at an important time. SVCC carries out very important work, continuously supporting victims of sexual violence and fighting for legislative reform to protect victims in the justice system. The Centre has been providing services since 1983 when it was set up on International Women’s Day. The centre’s director Mary Crilly and her team have been true pillars of support for thousands of victims, and their families and friends over the years and they continue to do so with relentless energy.

Ten of Cork's promoters have joined forces to raise money for this extremely important service in Cork. Organisers include: Cosmonaut Music Cork, Merakindie, Aisling O’Riordan (Quarter Block Party) Paranoid Beast, Pethrophile, Teletext Records, Cuttin Heads Collective, Stevie G, Twitch Jnr, Penske, UCC SU, IndieCork, Cork Loves Music and Rebel City Gigs.

Performers on the night include The Altered Hours, Stevie G, Cuttin Heads Collective, Elaine Malone, Horse, Cara Kursh, Red Sun Alert, Twitch Jnr. and Gadget and The Cloud.

Speaking about the fundraiser Cormac Daly of Cosmonaut Music Cork says “Emma [Kelly, Merakindie] and I were chatting about organising a fundraiser for the SVCC in response to the events of recent weeks. I decided to put a post out on social media and got an overwhelmingly positive response from the Cork community. That’s when we decided to turn this into a collaboration between all of the people that were offering their support. It’s really heartwarming to see everyone come together for such an important cause".

Tickets for the Undivided: A Fundraiser For Cork Sexual Violence Centre cost €10 and are available online here. They will also be available to buy at Cyprus Avenue at the door.
