Do we really need fashion week anymore?

Fashion weeks occur in most of the major fashion destinations in the world on a bi-yearly schedule (Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter). It is here that fashion designers showcase their new designs for the future season, essentially ‘telling us’ what is going to be in fashion.Fashion week used to be an exclusive event to those deemed important enough to attend, but now with the emergence of social media, everyone has instant access to the latest trends. Models, like Gigi Hadid, are not just models anymore, they are celebrities in their own right. With these models being active on snapchat, we also get to experience the backstage processes of hair, makeup etc.  Does society care what the luxury designers have produced? Most of the fashion trends we have seen in recent months have been dictated by the celebrities du jour.Fashion is an art form. There are five categories within collections, ready-to-wear, couture, pre-fall, menswear and resort. Not including the ‘ready-to-wear’ collections, couture gowns are truly beautiful. Many would argue that these type of pieces are unwearable, but wearability is not the point of these types of collections. They are supposed to be extravagant. Fashion shows are a theatrical event, it’s not just about the clothing.Maybe we don’t need fashion week anymore, but was fashion ever about ‘need’ anyway?
