Double delight for Cork City FC

It was a month of double delights for Cork City and Cork City Women’s FC, as the Leesiders both made a double date at the Aviva Stadium in the 2017 FAI Cup finals. For league & cup double-seeking Cork City FC, the 2017 final is yet another tick on an excellent season for John Caulfield’s side. Having already claimed the President’s Cup and the Munster Senior Cup, City currently rest eleven points clear at the summit of the SSE Airtricity League. At the time of print, two points are needed to secure the Rebel Army’s first league title since 2005. In a cup run which has seen City sweep passed Bray Wanderers, Athlone Town, Longford Town and Limerick FC to book a place in November’s decider. Memories of last season’s last-ditch winner from Seani Maguire are long lasting, with City now aiming to retain the cup for the first time in their history.Meanwhile, Cork City Womens FC booked their place in November’s final following a 3-0 comprehensive win against the 2015 champions Wexford WFC last weekend. This is the Rebel Army’s first time taking part in November’s showpiece final since the club’s inception in 2013. Goals from Maggie Duncliffe, Claire Shine and Katie McCarthy eased the Rebel Army to victory on Saturday, with a number of UCC players on the field.Leading the line was captain Ciara McNamara. Following on from an impressive 2017, McNamara is a third year Social Science student in UCC while captaining Cork City Womens... while also lining out for the ‘Girls in Green’ at the University World Games in Taipei last August. Elsewhere, UCC are also represented by Eve Badana and Kate O’Donovan. History has been made, as Cork City FC have become the first side to have both the male and female sides lining out at the cup final. Cork City WFC will play either UCD Waves or Shelbourne Ladies on Sunday November 5th at the Aviva Stadium, while the men’s team will face either Dundalk or Shamrock Rovers in their final.
