IT Sligo and Queen's kicked out of Sigerson Cup

Sigerson Cup hosts UCC have qualified for the finals weekend after both IT Sligo and Queen’s University were thrown out of the competition. Both colleges were found to have fielded ineligible players in their first round game, which IT Sligo won in extra-time.The westerners fielded Stephen Doak, who was ruled ineligible as he is a full-time sabbatical officer with the institute’s Students’ Union. However, Queen’s, who would have been otherwise reinstated, were found to have fielded three students from Stranmillis College, who set up their own GAA team this year. Ciaran O’Hanlon, Tony Donnelly and Greg McCabe were, thus, all ruled ineligible. Both colleges have three days in which to lodge an appeal. But, as it stands, UCC will face either UL or IT Carlow in the Mardyke on Friday, February 20th as they bid to defend their title. Image from Sigerson Cup launch by: Tony O'Connell Photography.
