Maguire on fire for Boys in Green

It was a day of dreams for Seani Maguire, as the Preston North End frontman made his senior debut for the Republic of Ireland as they overcame Moldova at the Aviva Stadium. Less than four months ago the Kilkenny native was coming off the bench for Cork City FC as they went on to win the Munster Senior Cup. In what can best be described as a whirlwind year for the striker, 2017 has seen the 23 year old shoot Cork City FC to the summit of the SSE Airtricity League, earning him a move to Preston North End in the English Championship and a place at the table in Martin O’Neill’s senior side. It is the stuff of dreams for Maguire, whose rapid rise to fame was rooted with ties to University College Cork. When he signed from Dundalk in 2015, Seani worked under former UCC manager John Caulfield as he scored himself to the golden boot domestically. In his training regime, the striker was trained, coached and watched at the Mardyke Arena while he maintained his fitness 100% across the 2016 League of Ireland season. Across the year he fired City into the third round of the UEFA Europa League, and to double cup successes in the FAI Cup and the President’s Cup. 2017 was a massive step for Maguire, who remained at Cork City FC. Starting off the season with another President’s Cup win, Sean would go on to score 22 goals for the Rebel Army, which shot them to eighteen points clear at the top of the league, as well as scoring a hat trick against Levadia Tallinn in the UEFA Europa League before moving across channel for €250,000 in July 2017. The future looks bright for Maguire, having already scored for his new club several times just 9 games into the season.The Ireland team for the game against included Cork’s own David Meyler, Conor Hourihane, Kevin Long and former Cork City frontman Shane Long, who was subbed to give to Maguire his debut.
