Review of How to Keep an Alien

How to Keep an Alien, written and performed by Sonya Kelly started its run in the Everyman Theatre on Monday the 19th of October. I was lucky enough to see it on its opening night, and it did not disappoint. The audience was treated to a brilliant night of laugh out loud comedy that lasted just over an hour and a half. How to Keep an Alien is an autobiographical tale, telling the story of Sonya Kelly and the Australian Kate who meet and fall in love. What ensues is a story imbued with comedy and emotion as they seek to prove that they deserve to live together in Ireland; as Kate’s visa is up. The audience follows Sonya as she desperately tries to follow the paper trail of evidence all over the world in order to prove to the Irish Immigration people that they deserve to be together. The play begins before the audience knows it. In a genius move, Sonya comes onto the stage and introduces herself as our performer for the evening, along with her stage manager Justin. And then they simply carry on. Sonya and Justin addressing the audience is an integral part of the story; as she is relaying her tale to us.How to Keep an Alien is an emotionally gripping tale, yet it is filled with uproariously brilliant comedy throughout. From verbal to physical comedy, Sonya Kelly has certainly got the art down to a tee. Her enthralling sense of humour ensured there was never a dull moment, and the audience was constantly laughing. Justin the stage manager was equally as funny as Sonya, and played his part incredibly well.Another highlight of the play is the accompanying soundtrack and SFX. Both add to the atmosphere and humour of the story in brilliant ways. It would not be nearly as powerful without them.In conclusion, How to Keep an Alien is a fun filled night for everyone, and it is definitely worth your while heading out to see it if you get the chance.
