Sigerson 2015 Launched in UCC

The Sigerson Cup 2015 was launched yesterday in the Quad, UCC.The weekend tournament will be held on February 21st, with a host of inter county stars expected to be involved.The Intependant is a new sponsor to the competition this year; with sports editor Ger Keville commenting on the new venture. “Independent.ie is Ireland’s premier destination for sports, complete with up to date coverage and news of all competitions. As the major sponsor of the Sigerson Cup we are excited to be able to provide even more coverage of such a prestigious competition, loved by Irish people.”The Sigerson was originally founded in 1911, with only three participants in UCC, UCG and UCD. The numbers have significantly increased since UCD won the first Sigerson. The highlight of the opening week’s fixtures will be here in the Mardyke, where a local Cork derby between UCC and CIT will take place on January 27th at 2.30pm.President of UCC GAA Club, Dr Con Murphy, spoke a few words at the launch. “UCC are delighted and honoured to host the finals of these competitions this year. We are only too aware ourselves of how difficult it will be to qualify for the weekend. The competitions are a very important part of a student’s playing life and above all one should not lose sight of the fact we compete for enjoyment. We would like to thank Independent.ie for their sponsorship and look forward to welcoming them to the Mardyke on the first championship weekend of their patronage. We also extend a big welcome to all colleges who will visit Cork on February 20^th and 21^st”.
