Sport in Brief – Enright appointed hurling manager | Stephen Barry
Hurling: Eddie Enright was confirmed as the new UCC hurling manager on Friday, stepping into the shoes of the late Paul O’Connor. Enright was part of O’Connor’s backroom team which won the centenary Fitzgibbon Cup last March and previously captained UCC to his third Fitzgibbon medal in a row in 1998, a year after he had been named player of the tournament. The midfielder was nominated for the Fitzgibbon Team of the Century. At inter-county level, Enright won a National League and an All-Ireland title with Tipperary and added an All-Star in 2001.Handball: Kerry duo Maria Daly and Ashley Prendiville were beaten in the final of the Womens’ Open Doubles competition at the World Handball Championships in the Citywest Hotel on Friday evening. The UCC graduates fell at the final hurdle to the reigning champions, Fiona Shannon and Sibeal Gallagher after a tie-breaker game, 21-16, 16-21, 11-3.Kickboxing: Second year Sports Science student Cayce Waldron took part in this month’s WKC World Kickboxing Championships, returning home from Montreal with a pair of silver medals. In the 50kg Womens’ points-fighting final she was defeated by hometown favourite Karolyn Bedard while in the light-contact final it was Chloe Love of England who got between Waldron and gold.Rugby: The U21 rugby intervarsity was hosted by UCC in the Farm on Saturday; however the Conroy Cup only paid a brief visit to Cork as UCD left with the spoils for the fifth year in a row. UCC were the last college other than the Belfield side to win the competition.Hockey: Andrew Gray (Senior Men’s Club Player of the Year nominee) missed out on the big prize at the Irish Hockey Awards on Saturday as did fellow UCC player Malcolm Coombes (Umpire of the Year nominee). However graduates, Audrey O’Flynn (Irish Players’ Player of the Year) and Phil Oakley (Coach of the Year), beat off all comers in their categories. Meanwhile Miriam Crowley won her 50th Irish cap during the Champions Challenge 1 tournament, in which Ireland won bronze. On her return to the UCC team she netted twice to help maintain the college’s 100% record.Golf: Ian O’Rourke finished in a tie for eighth at the national intervarsity championships in Tramore GC. On day one O’Rourke fell off the pace with rounds of 73 and 77. His final round 70 the following day was the best of the field on the Burrows layout.Gaelic football: In a repeat of last year’s Ryan Cup final, UCC welcomed IT Carlow to the Mardyke for their season-opening league game last Thursday. A first-quarter goal helped Carlow to a 1-4 to 0-4 half-time lead. However UCC outscored Carlow 6-3 in the final 15 minutes to draw the game, 1-11 to 14 points.Ultimate Frisbee: UCC were knocked out at the quarter-final stage of the Cork Open, an event which the college club hosted. Rebel Ultimate, a UCC alumni team, were the eventual winners. Then on Saturday the club received the honour of being named the IFDA Club of the Year as well as individual awards going to Dónal Murray (Male Player of the Year), Matthew O’Callaghan (Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Irish Disc Sports) and Cáitlín Looney (U20 Female Player of the Year).
