Sport in Brief – Tramps take silver | AnnMarie Flynn and Stephen Barry

Trampoline: Following on from their earlier success at the Munster Open in October, UCC achieved great success at this year's Trampoline Intervarsities, hosted by Trinity College at the weekend. Hard work in training was well rewarded with success at all levels of competition as they took second place overall. Aoife Connor won silver with Lisa Kelly taking bronze in Novice Ladies. Cassie Colwell emerged on top of the highly contested Intermediate Ladies competition. Club PRO, AnnMarie Flynn took bronze in Advanced Ladies. At the highest level of competition, Fiaah Heffernan won Bronze in Elite Ladies and Gary Fitzgibbon took silver in Elite Men.In Synchronised Trampolining UCC took the competition by storm, taking gold (Elaine O'Neill and Ria Noon), silver (Eleanor Marks and Sarah Mullins) and bronze (Eleanor Marks and Michelle Murphy) in the Novice/Intermediate category. They also added gold (AnnMarie Flynn and Jack Kettle) and silver (AnnMarie Flynn and Gary Fitzgibbon) in the Advanced/Elite category. AMFAthletics: UCC finished second in the IUAA Road Relay Championships women’s race, losing out by 10 seconds to DCU who won their ninth title in a row. In the four-leg relay, a brilliant second leg by Laura Crowe had UCC well in contention. Sinéad O’Connor took up the running and proceeded to run the fastest two-mile leg of the day, in ten and a half minutes, to give UCC a narrow lead heading into the final mile. However DCU overtook in that final leg to win in a time of 32 minutes and 32 seconds, with UCC comfortably ahead of third-placed Trinity.Ultimate Frisbee: UCC failed in their bid to take their fourth consecutive Open Indoor Intervarsity title at the weekend. UCC’s first team rectified their group stage underperformance with a 10-7 win over UCC 2to advance to the semis against top seeds UL. UCC took revenge on universe point, 11-10 but fell in the final to Trinity College on a scoreline of 12 points to 10. UCC never led in this game and despite managing to level the tie at 5, 6 and 7 all Trinity were able to hold out for victory.Hockey: UCC lost their unbeaten record in their top-of-the-table clash against Harlequins on Thursday night. By winning their first five league games, UCC put themselves on top of the league alongside league favourites Catholic Institute and last year’s runners-up, Harlequins. However in an even contest, a 24th minute Cliodhna Sargent goal from a short corner proved decisive. Meanwhile the men’s hockey club had the brief distinction of topping three of Munster’s four leagues; the B team are top of division 2, the C side are first in division 3, and the D side were on top of division 4 for a few hours on Sunday before Catholic Institute B won to regain top spot.GAA: Six of UCC’s finest sportswomen were honoured with All-Star awards in November. Cork’s Pamela and Katrína Mackey became the first twins to receive Camogie All-Stars, while UCC had four ladies football awardees; Kerry’s Cáit Lynch and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh were awarded while Ciara O’Sullivan and Valerie Mulcahy added the individual awards to their All-Ireland winners medals.Sailing: The UCC first team progressed to the quarter-final stages of the National Team Racing Championships held in Schull on the 10th and 11th of November, in what was a huge improvement from the previous year’s performance.
