The Academic to play in Devere Hall as part of Freshers Events.

By News Editor Cormac McCarthy

Freshers week is kicking off with a bang, with a diverse range of events going on all week. Starting off on Sunday, legendary Galway-based DJ Shampain will be playing a set in Cyprus Avenue. This event, organised by the UCC DJ Society, will also feature a range of other DJs and producers including Neil Meehan, B2b, Ladrin and Emily Dunne.

On Monday, Mullingar based purveyors of indie-rock, The Academic will be playing a near sold-out show in Devere Hall on Monday afternoon brought to you by UCC Commerce society. After just coming off being on tour with One-Direction Star Louis Tomlinson in his North American tour, the band have gathered quite the following both in Ireland and abroad.

Supporting them are local UCC favourites Iris, an indie-pop band who have also been gathering their own modest following. Speaking to bassist and singer Zoe Callanan, it was clear the excitement this opportunity had brought the band.

“It’s surreal to see our name on the bill with The Academic. When we found out, we couldn’t believe it. It’s an amazing feeling to be opening for a band that has had such an impactful presence in the Irish music scene. It’s mad that one of our first posts was a cover of Bear Claws and two years later we get to support them. It’s come full circle!”

The entire week is full of events to get everyone back into the swing of things. There are food vendors, language events, networking sessions for a range of societies and clubs, as well as a series of community markets and trivia events. More information is available on the Students’ Union’s social pages.
