UCC miss out on Senior Cup finals weekend | Annette Gilroy

UCC 0Ards 2UCC’s Irish Senior Cup campaign ended is disappointment on Saturday the 16th as they went down 2-0 to Northern-side Ards in the Mardyke.College started off the stronger of the two sides creating chances early on in the first half. Ards took first blood after 15 minutes with former Irish International Janice Vaughan scoring from a tight angle. College upped their game before half time and were unfortunate not to equalise after a string of good saves by the Ards net minder.College came out all guns blazing and were unlucky not to equalise early in the second half when a controversial goal line mêlée resulted in a free out for the Northerners. Ards made it 2-0 soon after from a Becky Weir strike.College tried to fight their way back into the game with chances for Irish International Miriam Crowley, Rachel O’Hanlon and Aine Curran. However UCC were left a man short with just 8 minutes to go when Irish Youth Olympian Antonia McGrath was given a yellow card for a strong tackle on an Ards player. Sadly it was not to be for UCC as Ards held the 2-0 lead to the end.College can be reassured by strong performances all over the pitch with captain Aine Curran, Amy-Kate Trevor and Nicola Kerr all at the peak of their game. UCC will have a busy few weeks ahead with top of the table clashes against Cork Harlequins and Catholic Institute to look forward to which will ultimately decide which of those three sides takes the Munster Senior League title. College also face into a Munster Senior Cup semi-final against Church Of Ireland.
