What’s Happening in Science in 2024?

2024 will be an exciting year for science. New research is always emerging, and it is important that students are a part of it. There are many interesting events happening throughout Ireland. From medicine to technology, there is something for everyone. So, if you want to widen your scientific knowledge, here are some events that you do not want to miss.
Zero Day Con – Evolve 2024
This is an event focused purely on Cybersecurity. Speakers include experts from the National Cyber Security Centre, Smarttech247, Clunetech, Threatlocker, and Accenture. Our own Gerrard Culley and Barry Foley from UCC will also be speaking. The conference takes place on the 6 March in Dublin. This event is a unique opportunity to meet and engage with industry leaders, as well as learning about next-generation Cybersecurity.

BioPharma & Life Sciences Connected Live
This Cork-based conference is an opportunity to hear from global experts in pharmaceutical manufacturing. There will be 75 speakers leading in biotech and biopharmaceuticals. Panel discussions and case studies will feature and there will be many chances for networking with exhibitors including EuroPharma, Balcas Energy, Astech Ireland, and Environmental Monitoring Services. The free event will be held at the end of January at the Radisson Blue Hotel.

Dublin Tech Summit
This major conference represents sixty countries and hosts over two-hundred speakers. These include the CEO of ‘We Do Solar’, the Enterprise Systems Officer of ‘CERN’, the Sr. Director of AI at ‘Shutterstock’, the Commissioner for ‘Data Protection Ireland’, as well as the CEO of ‘AI Ireland’. There are also many workshops available. If your passion is cutting edge technology, then this is the conference for you. The event takes place from the 29-30th of May in the RDS. Early bird tickets start at €200, however group bookings and video formats are available.
Physics Meets Poetry
A different type of event but one that is worth noting is this poetry session with Prof. Iggy McGovern. The life of William Rowan Hamilton will be narrated through sonnets from “A Mystic Dream of 4”. This is just one of the free events hosted by Trinity College on the 18th of April. One interesting workshop is on ‘Science Communication’ with attendance from Dr. Cormac O'Raifeartaigh (SETU), Siobhán Ryan (Met Éireann), and Hal Hodson (The Economist). Another is the ‘Researcher Masterclass’, where students gain knowledge from physics alumni from around the world. UCC is having its own TY Physics week from 12-16th of February, where TY students get a tour of the physics labs and can attend lectures.

National Sustainability Summit
This free event will be held from the 28-29th of May at the RDS. The focus will be on the Climate Action Plan which sets out actions to help Ireland achieve its carbon emissions targets. The plan aims to have 70% of Irelands electricity renewably sourced by 2030. Speakers will include the CEO of ‘Irish Social Enterprise Network’, VP of Sustainability at ‘Merk Life Science’, Sr. Marketing Manager at ‘refurbed.ie’, and many more. Exhibitors include Takumi, Start Solar, Megatech, Digren Energy, and Engineering Industries Ireland. The SEAI Energy Show, Irelands leading energy event, will also take place in the RDS from 20-21th from March.
