Referendum to raise capitation by €50 announced

A referendum on the Students' Union's position on Irish Unity was already confirmed to run alongside the SU elections on March 6th & 7th, but today it was announced that a second referendum will take place across the two days.The referendum will ask students to increase their capitation costs by €50. The capitation fee is part of fees paid at the start of every academic year, and is traditionally used for the various student services on campus. The increase is to be used for the development of outdoor spaces & physical activity facilities, both on and off campus. The proposal also says that the €40 from every student's capitation that goes to funding the Mardyke Arena will also go into this fund, meaning that, if it passes, €90 from every student will go towards this development fund. If passed, this proposal will mean that approximately €2,000,000 will go into the development of these outdoor facilities every academic year.For more information on this referendum, email UCC Students' Union on info@uccsu.ie.
